Indonesia is perhaps less famous as a eastern travel destination that Thailand although to many it offers so much more than any of the other countries in South East Asia. Indonesia is highly diverse in many ways, in culture, landscape, food, ceremonial practices, religion and languages. There are over 1700 islands in the Indonesian archipelago and each has at least one language. These islands are united by the young language of Bahasa Indonesia as well as a general welcoming, accepting and relaxed attitude to life. For the reason Indonesia's motto translates as 'unity in diversity'. After spending any time in the country you will appreciate the power behind this as although there are many different cultures, there are underlying attributes which are considered classically Indonesian across the entire country. Indonesia offers a backpackers dream with everything from island hopping, jungle trekking, world class diving and snorkeling, shopping and a cultural collage unmatched on the earth. Indonesia is easy to travel around with cheap transport and accommodation always available, welcoming people and mutual respect in all circumstances. Whether you are surfing on safari in Lombok or Sumbawa, mountain trekking the gouged and deep ravines and crevasses of tribal Papua, sipping an elegant cocktail in Bali or diving around the world class reefs of Sulawesi, everybody who travels to Indonesia will experience the same tropical warmth in culture as well as on the beaches.
