Kelimutu

Kelimutu is the area around the impressive and unforgettable Mount Kelimutu. This incredible mountain is home to the three colored lakes which are one of Indonesia’s most famous and beautiful sights. Around the Kelimutu area the local language is Kelimutu Tiwu Telu which is also the name of one of the main volcanoes. Interestingly, although these three lakes have always been colored different color and are fabled as having spiritual importance in al of the surrounding religions, the lakes have actually changed color from that of the history books due to volcanic activity. The formally distinct colors of red, blue and white and been continually changed after the eruption of Mount Iya in Ende in 1969. According to science, these changes are due to the varying quantities of different chemicals and volcanic processes that have changed since the recent eruption. Kelimutu is one of the main national parks of Flores and offers 5300 hectares of land including palm trees, pine trees, mountain figs, and redwood rainforest trees as well as plenty of other plants. As well as this there is also a large number f animals including monkeys and many other species.

There are many local myths surrounding Kelimutu and its beautiful lakes, the main of which is the story of two giants and the orphans whose spirits rest in the mountains. You will hear much more on this when you arrive and look around the area. On of the best things is who accessible this peak is, although full trek trips are popular with the experienced and enthusiastic, it is possible to drive most of the way be car and then only have a 20 minute walk to reach the peak. This is best timed in time for sunrise when you will see the sun rise over a clear morning as light sheds over the mystifying lakes and across the land. For a very low price you will be able to see one of the traditional dances which are performed in the village for the benefit of the tourists who have come to see the area. You can also buy the gem stones which are found in the area. All of the travel expenses on this trip are astonishingly low meaning that you will really be able to do and see as much as possible if time is not too bigger factor. Kelimutu is one of Indonesia’s most beautiful sights and there is not shortage of culture and activities to enjoy while you are there.
