Medan

Medan is the capital city of North Sumatera Province, and is the biggest city in the world's 3rd largest island of Sumatera. The island measures 370,000 square kilometers and has a population of 32 million. Its dense forest is house to exotic fauna and countless types of endemic ape Orang Utan. North Sumatera has very heterogeneous ethnic groups, and cultures. In general they can be divided into five main ethnic groups and Languages: 1. The coastal Malays, living along the Malaka Straits 2. The Bataks, consisting of the sub-tribes around Lake Toba and Samosir Island, are Karo, Toba, Dairi, Simalungun 3. The Angkola or Mandailing of the southern Tapanuli 4. Nias Islanders off the western coast of the province 5. Several ethnic groups live in Medan and other towns of North Sumatra, the largest of these being Chinese and Indian. Each of these groups have their own dialects, religious beliefs, arts, custom and cultures
