South Sulawesi

South Sulawesi has one of the richest trading histories of all of Indonesia. This is partly due to the native people and the traveling and boating component of their culture. As well as this there have been a number of different Colonial traders who have attempted to gain a monopoly over the valuable spices and materials that have always been rich in Sulawesi. Sulawesi is located in Indonesia in such a location that it has been a natural place to develop into a bustling center of trade for the traders of the past. The Spanish and Portuguese where the first western countries on the scene and since then, the Dutch traders have also jostled with the local Bugis water men and the pirates of Makassar. Today there is a great deal of history visible not only in the museums but all around the city of Makassar and many other areas of south Sulawesi. With the international history there is also the fascinating history involving the south east of Asia and the trading and interactions between these countries.

Getting to the South of Sulawesi is very easy with a number of different flights entering the airport of Makassar from all of the major Indonesian airports such as Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali. There are also a number of international flights from Malaysia entering the area. Some of the great attractions in South Sulawesi include the Bukit Kasih Toar Lumimuut which is an incredible hilly area which has a great place in history and an interesting village. And there is also the Manado Island which is a beautiful island and the main island in the bay of Manado. You will see a combination of all of the main tropical aspects of a perfect island with white sands, views of the mountains on the mainland and coral reefs under the clear waters which are great for swimming around and snorkeling.
