The capital of this Province is Mataram of Lombok and it is an area of interest in many ways including its tourism attractions. Bali is now more than ever a highly popular tourism destination and although it may have changed drastically over the last 20 years, it still offers the magic that people first started visiting the area to find. Now that boutique village and shopping have taken over most of the south of the island, you need not look far to find that traditional and simple Indonesian lifestyle. Lombok and even more so Sumbawa are rich in virgin beaches and traditional cultures where you will find areas with villas and hotels as well as all of the tourism facilities you will require but taking even the shortest excursion will return you to timeless Indonesian culture, landscapes and experiences. The province is divided onto eight separate regencies (or Kabupaten) and two municipalities (kotamadya). All of these regencies have something to offer the traveller and there are a whole variety of tours and trips available which include diving and snorkelling, surfing, mountain climbing and hiking, visiting temples and all sorts of cultural sights and much more.

West Nusa Tenggara is interesting geographically as it includes the western most tip of the eastern side of the Wallace line which was discovered by Alfred Russell Wallace and marks the boundary between the land from the Asian landmasses and the land originating from the Australasian area. This is significant in many ways as it accounts for the stark difference in the scenery offering beautiful dry landscapes with oasis’ of nature all around, white sand beaches rather than the Balinese black sands and a completely different set of wildlife and flora and fauna which has evolved separately over thousands of years. The culture of the people is also very different between the Balinese and the Sasak of Lombok and the people of Sumbawa. This has nothing to do with the Wallace line but the journey from Bali to Lombok is like a journey between to different countries as the contrasts are highly interesting and apparent making this an excellent trip as part of a Bali holiday especially for those who have visited Bali before and would like to see something else.

With Balinese influence in the history of West Nusa Tenggara, there is an interesting culture and history throughout the entire area. Beauty is in every corner of the province as well as a timeless feeling of travel where life is simple and the people area generally friendly and welcoming. Predominantly the province is Moslem as is most of the country of Indonesia; there are also minorities of Balinese Hinduism (six percent) and Christianity living integrated and peacefully within the communities. There are airports in Materam and Bima as well as easy access by land from Bali making West Nusa Tenggara an easy place to negotiate, especially with a guide.
